NCL cruise ship sailing past icebergs toward Dawes Glacier.

Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier

Location: Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier, Alaska, USA

Summary: A calm day of blue glacier ice, quiet fjord scenery, drifting ice, my peaceful Endicott Arm experience before heading on to Ketchikan.

Today the NCL Spirit sailed slowly through the Endicott Arm, giving us the chance to see the Dawes Glacier. It was another early start for me because I had an acupuncture appointment. The doctor seemed fascinated that I felt no pain in my right leg even as he increased the electric current. I had to explain that the nerve damage in that leg means I barely feel anything in certain areas. Still, by the end of the hour, the pain in my knee and leg had eased again.

This became a lazy, peaceful day. I spent most of it taking photos of the ship and the scenery as we travelled up the narrow fjord. The glacier looked imposing, even with the rain and dark clouds making visibility a bit difficult. What surprised me most was the amount of ice drifting past us, giant chunks of blue ice, the same vivid colour Iโ€™d seen on the Mendenhall Glacier.

Later in the day, I went to a show in the Spinnaker Lounge, but it was spoiled by a few drunk guests, so I slipped out early. I wanted to rest my legs anyway, especially with a gentle walk planned in the Tongass National Forest when we reach Ketchikan tomorrow.
